Second opinion

Been told your boiler needs replacing, or nobody can find the fault? Say what it's doing and what you've been told, and the message is written for you.

1What's it doing?

Pick everything that applies

2Read the pressure gauge

The round dial on the front or underside of the boiler. Slide to match where the needle sits.

Your second opinion request

Start with what it's doing.

Pick everything that applies, read the gauge if you can, and say what you've been told. Notes on what it often points to appear here, with the message written for you.

The message

Hi, I've filled in the second-opinion check on your website. Could you take a look? Thanks

A guide to what to say, not a diagnosis. Nothing is recommended until the boiler has been looked at.

Reading the gauge

01234BAR

Below 1 bar

Low for most sealed systems. If it keeps dropping after topping up, water is escaping somewhere.

01234BAR

1 to 2 bar

Where most homes sit, around 1 to 1.5 cold and a little higher when the heating is on.

01234BAR

Above 2.5 bar

High. Mention it, so the expansion vessel and relief valve get checked.

Typical figures only: your boiler's manual gives the right pressure for your system.

Smell gas? Don't use switches or naked flames. Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 first: free, 24 hours. Then ring R&R about the repair.

Boiler playing up? Get it looked at properly.

Say what it's doing and where you are. Been told to replace it? Run the second-opinion check and the message writes itself.
